Husky helps Visteon produce award-winning part for new Mustang
Simultaneous-shot injection molded instrument panel earns SPE automotive honors
DETROIT ?Visteon and Husky have partnered to produce a two-color instrument panel for the 2005 Ford Mustang that won top prize in the Process/Assembly/Enabling Technologies category at the recent SPE Automotive Innovation Awards.
Visteon is the first Tier I supplier to bring a molded-in-color, two-tone instrument panel to the automotive market.
Husky worked closely with Visteon engineers on the project and supplied the equipment ?a large-tonnage Quadloc Dual 1650, two-color injection molding machine with Polaris Control and Tracer TMB robot. The machine was built at Husky’s European manufacturing facility in Dudelange, Luxembourg, and the system was fully integrated at Husky’s Detroit Technical Center.
The entire project took only six months from concept to completion.
“We are thrilled to have been asked by Visteon to be part of this exciting project,?Rich Sieradzki, General Manager of Husky’s Detroit Technical Center, said. “It has allowed Husky to showcase our automotive capabilities and to work with great partners who value innovation.?
The unique process used to produce the instrument panel is known as simultaneous-shot injection molding. It involves the simultaneous injection of two colors into the mold from two different injection units on the molding machine, eliminating the need for additional painting processes. All knit lines on the injection molded substrate are covered by finish panels on the final product. The process helps reduce squeaks and rattles and improves scratch resistance. The process also reduces equipment costs, production time and scrap.
“Simultaneous-shot injection molding leads to lower costs, excellent product performance and minimal risk for the customer,?Sieradzki said. “Husky’s Quadloc Dual 1650 machine with Polaris Control provides the flexibility, reliability and shot-to-shot performance required for this complex process and part.?/textarea>
