PROVIDING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FROM FLUOROPLASTICS

LENZBURG, SWITZERLAND – K 2004 – Fluoroplastics are well known under the Teflon brand name and most people are familiar with it as giving non-sticky properties in pans for household use. However, what many people do not know is that fluoroplastics find a much wider use in many industrial and non-industrial applications, having remarkable temperature, purity, high chemical and corrosion resistance properties that provide high performing, cost-efficient solutions for applications in industries like semiconductors, chemical processing, environmental and energy management or oil exploration. Under the SYMALIT brand name, Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products offers a number of fluoroplastics including plain sheets, fabric backed lining sheets, films, rods, and other forms made of materials such as PVDF, ECTFE, ETFE, FEP, MFA or PFA, all of which are fluoroplastics with distinctive performance qualities.

The range of applications is broad. The following three examples show however, where Quadrant provides innovative solutions:

New dual laminate concept for high pressure/vacuum application in the chemical processing industry

SYMALIT fluoroplastics supported RL Industries, Inc. Fairfield, Ohio, a provider of dual laminate processing equipment, in developing a unique dual laminate high pressure absorption column which complies with Section X of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The column withstands pressures between -1.0 bar (-14.7 psig) of vacuum and 3.1 bar (45 psig) of internal pressure. RL Industries’ experience in design and fabrication with SYMALIT fluoroplastics provided the end user with a cost effective long-term alternative to mineral fiber reinforced phenolic resin and high cost zirconium. Combined efforts resulted in an optimal solution to satisfy the increasing need for high pressure, corrosion resistant equipment.

Fluoroplastics contribute to cleaner and efficient energy

Increase of energy efficiency and reduction of emissions are driving innovation in the energy management and production. Within the upcoming years existing coal and oil fueled power plants will have to be upgraded or rebuilt around the globe to satisfy new efficiency and environmental standards. Fluoroplastics are playing an increasing role and have found a good inroad into this sector.

They are used in innovative solutions for the treatment of highly corrosive flue gases and heat exchanger applications for processing of gases with high concentrations of SO2, SO3, NOx, HCL, HF, and other toxins.

Compared to existing solutions from materials such as alloys, hastelloys or flake linings, SYMALIT FEP, SYMALIT MFA and SYMALIT PFA provide ideal solutions in the flue gas treatment and heat exchanger applications by offering high heat resistance of up to 260°C in combination with high chemical and corrosion resistance attributes. Due to reduced corrosion with SYMALIT fluoroplastics the maintenance intervals can be drastically increased, reducing considerably downtime cost and increasing availability of the power plant.

Innovation to semiconductor wet station applications

Quadrant recently launched its SYMALIT PVDF FM4910 program for high purity wet bench applications in the semiconductor industry. SYMALIT PVDF FM4910 meets Factory Mutual Standard FM4910 Safety Protocol for low combustible and flame retardant materials designed to address the need to reduce the risk of loss in clean rooms and wet bench environments. Benefits inherent to SYMALIT PVDF FM4910 include flame and chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, and ease of machining. Also, due to the high quality standards used for its processing, SYMALIT PVDF FM4910 provides a high level of purity with a smooth glossy surface and a unique material consistency. SYMALIT FM4910 is available in metric and imperial sizes and can by offered up to 25 mm or 1 inch.
