Vyncolit

Vyncolit - a world-class leader in phenolic material solutions

Vyncolit, a market leader in engineering thermosets, is the principal company within, the engineering materials division of the Perstorp Group, the Swedish supply major in specialty chemicals.

Vyncolit is highly specialised in the field of thermoset chemistry. Its Vyncolit® and Vyntec engineering thermosets have a combination of exceptional properties that make them the materials of choice for the replacement of metal, as well as thermoplastics, in a broad range of high-tech applications.

Based on phenolic resins and a variety of reinforcing fibres in addition to specialty products such as Epoxy, DAP & Silicone, Vyncolit finds a fit in the most demanding components and operating environments. The materials are characterised by their heat and creep resistance, dimensional stability and load bearing performance, and by their ease of moulding into tight tolerance, complex parts. This profile enables their specification for a complete spectrum of applications in the automotive, electrical, gas and aviation industries, among others.

Complementing its broad product line, Vyncolit provides a full suite of technical services to customers. This support, which spans the complete product development cycle from initial design through to prototyping and testing, is delivered by two recently constructed, state-of-the-art Technical Market Development Centres (TMDC); one at the company’s headquarter site in Gent, Belgium and the other in Detroit, USA. The TMDC is the focal point of Vyncolit’s 80 years of experience in developing application solutions in high-tech mouldable thermoset composites.

Vyncolit traces its beginnings to the foundation of Vynckier N.V. in 1920. A pioneer in this field of electrical devices, Vynckier began producing phenolic compounds in 1924 as a superior but less expensive replacement for the ceramic insulating materials it used in its products. Today, Vyncolit continues this heritage as an global innovator in thermosets by offering material solutions and application development through its dedicated team of technologists in both Europe & US.

The company began commercial sales of Vyncolite phenolic material in 1940 with expansion into export business 20 years later. Rapid growth followed with a number of acquisitions and in 1993 Vyncolit N.V. was formed when the company’s phenolic products were rebranded with the same name as well. At the end of the following year Vyncolit N.V. was acquired by the Perstorp Group. In 2002, Vyncolit purchased the Moldable Composites Division of Rogers Corporation, a US-based producer of high performance mouldable phenolic composites principally supplied to the automotive and electrical industries. The combined revenue of the enlarged Vyncolit business is now in excess of $70MM.

Perstorp AB was acquired in 2001 by Sydsvenska Kemi AB, at which time its operations were merged with the complementary business of Neste Oxo AB which was already owned by the parent company. The Group is world-leading within several of its operating areas in specialised chemical markets. Its products are mainly sold to companies in paint, chemicals and plastic-based industries but its range also includes materials such as polyols, performance chemicals and resins for the engineering and construction industries. Perstorp and Neste Oxo employ 2,100 personnel and have combined annual sales of approximately SEK 7 billion (US$ 756 million). Production is carried out in eight countries in Europe, North America and Asia.

Vyncolit® is a registered trademark of Vyncolit, Belgium.
