Sweet Success: 10 Year Anniversary of Tate & Lyle's SPLENDA® Sucralose in Asia

Shanghai, China, Aug 25, 2009 – Tate & Lyle announced that this July marked the ten year anniversary since the company introduced its breakthrough sweetener - SPLENDA® Sucralose – to the Asian market. Tate & Lyle’s SPLENDA® Sucralose has won over some of the leading food and beverage manufacturers throughout Asia, especially in Japan, due to its superior quality. SPLENDA® Sucralose is a no-calorie, high-intensity sweetener that is made from sugar, tastes like sugar but it’s not sugar. It is highly stable and therefore can retain its sweetness through a variety of high-temperature processing techniques and over long periods on the shelf. In 2008, Sucralose accounted for 32% of new products using high intensity sweeteners in the Asia Pacific region and an impressive 59% of new products in Japan. SPLENDA® Sucralose can be found in over 4000 products worldwide. Tate & Lyle believes the increasing acceptance of SPLENDA® Sucralose in the Asia Pacific has laid a firm foundation for future business development in the region.

“We are delighted to celebrate this anniversary with our customers and employees, whom together have helped SPLENDA® Sucralose achieve wide acclaim among Asian consumers,” said Greg Morency, Vice President of Tate & Lyle Asia Pacific. “The success of Tate & Lyle’s SPLENDA® Sucralose underlines our broader commitment to quality, customer service and continuous growth in Asia.”

Ten years ago, Tate & Lyle believed Asian markets represented significant growth potential for SPLENDA® Sucralose. Two important considerations for Tate & Lyle before introducing the product into these disparate markets were with supply and regulatory approval. New products ingredients/additives which usually fall under regulated categories face different regulatory practices in different Asian countries leading to a time-consuming process requiring enormous effort - particularly in Japan, one of the sternest in the world for food products.

The distribution of finished food items in various parts of Asia also offered challenge, due to varying temperatures and transportation infrastructure.

However, the stability of SPLENDA® Sucralose means that the food product maintains its sweetness to consistently deliver the true flavor of the product throughout the shelf life, irrespective of the challenging conditions in some distribution channels.

Mr. Sebastian Lemke, Senior Product Manager, Sucralose, Tate & Lyle Asia Pacific said, “Healthy food is becoming increasingly important for Asian consumers. Tate & Lyle’s SPLENDA® Sucralose has demonstrated an excellent performance ever since its initial launch. We foresee a greater number of food manufacturers applying SPLENDA® Sucralose to meet new consumer demands in health and wellness, our regional offices and labs in Melbourne, Mumbai and Shanghai will continue to help Asian customers to use Tate & Lyle Sucralose efficiently and effectively. ”
